Volunteers Needed- Southwest Louisiana Planting Marsh Grasses to Restore Wetlands
|
The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and the America’s WETLAND Foundation are looking for volunteers to help plant 5,000 plugs of marsh grass at the Black Lake Marsh/Marcantel Property wetland restoration site in Hackberry, LA. The Black Lake Marsh site has been suffering land loss due to saltwater intrusion, wave erosion and hurricane damage from the storms of the last five years. The objective of this volunteer project would be to plant marsh grass along a newly constructed levee to help prevent further erosion and to stabilize the soil. Volunteer efforts will produce new habitats that will support a variety of aquatic wildlife and migratory birds.

Where: Volunteers will meet at St. Peter Church located on the corner of Highway 27 and West Main Drive in Hackberry, Louisiana. From there we will caravan approximately 5 miles to the planting site. When: Monday March 21, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers will be planting grasses along a newly constructed levee in Black Lake. Volunteers will be able to walk along the levee to plant or will be transported down the levee by boat. All planting equipment (gloves, shovels, dibbles, etc.), sunscreen and bug spray will be provided. Drinks and lunch will be provided to all volunteers. What to Bring: Rubber boots or old tennis shoes are recommended. Volunteers will be planting along the levee and will likely not have to get in the water (however, when working it a wetland, there is always a chance that volunteers will get wet or muddy). Comfortable clothes that can get dirty will be needed (a change of clothes and towel for the end of the day is also recommended). Additional information will be sent out to registered volunteers a few days before the event.
This restoration event is supported by the America's WETLAND Foundation (AWF) in conjunction with AWF's Blue Ribbon Resilient Communities Forum being held in Lake Charles, LA on March 22-23, 2011. Additional support comes through partnerships with Restore America’s Estuaries, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Curt Marcantel.
