Director of Communications & Marketing

Organization: The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) is Louisiana’s oldest, statewide non-profit organization dedicated to coastal restoration. CRCL drives bold, science-based action to rebuild our coast through outreach, restoration and advocacy.  CRCL connects with thousands of people each year through volunteers who plant marsh grasses and trees across our coast, membership, newsletters and the State of the Coast conference. CRCL brings together a diverse and non-partisan set of interests through its partnerships and Board of Directors.


Position Description:  The Director of Communications & Marketing will be responsible for the development and implementation of all CRCL’s communications and public relations activities and marketing strategies. This is a tremendous opportunity for a communications leader to maximize and strengthen the capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization.  The ideal candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager who will develop and lead an internal team. They will report to and act as a thought-partner for the Executive Director. The successful candidate will join a talented staff, enjoy a high-energy flexible work environment, and work with CRCL’s strategic partners and Board of Directors.  CRCL’s annual budget is approximately $2 million.



  • Play a key role on the Leadership Team and contribute to developing and achieving the organization’s overall strategic plan and innovation initiatives.

  • Develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy to advance CRCL’s brand identity, broaden awareness of CRCL programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of CRCL programs.

  • Cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted audiences and strategic partners.

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications and marketing function including budgeting, planning, staff management and development, and vendor relationship management.

  • Oversee the development of CRCL’s varied and integrated communications products and services, including but not limited to newsletters, print collateral, website content including videos and blog posts, media and public relations and social media platforms.

  • Identify significant media and public policy opportunities that can be leveraged to support CRCL’s work. Create and implement campaigns centered around those issues.   

  • Plan and oversee CRCL’s Coastal Issues Forum series and play a leadership role in planning of the State of the Coast conference.

  • Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization, working closely with the ED and program staff.

  • Articulate, track and assess progress against communications and marketing goals. Maintain strong operational systems for efficient and effective team execution.



  • BA required; advanced degree in journalism, marketing, communications, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum 5 - 7 years of marketing and/or communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations.

  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing initiatives to advance an organization's mission and goals.

  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.

  • Excellent writing skills and storytelling abilities that connect target audiences and new supporters to CRCL’s brand, mission and impact.

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills and comfort with public speaking.

  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.

  • Fluency in new media technologies including social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. 

  • Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communications specialists.

Compensation:            Commensurate with Experience.  Generous health and retirement benefits provided.


Location:                      New Orleans or Baton Rouge, LA, with some statewide travel required.

Starting Date:              May/June 2019
