"This is Louisiana's Moment"
The fifth biennial State of the Coast Conference, a partnership of the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and The Water Institute of the Gulf, was a huge success. From May 30 to June 1, more than 1,200 people gathered to share information and ideas about the dynamic conditions of Louisiana’s coastal communities, environment, and economy.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell and U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy joined the event to highlight the importance of Louisiana’s coastal issues.
Governor Edwards opened the conference with optimism declaring, “I actually believe this is Louisiana’s moment.” He traveled to New Orleans for the event despite much activity in Baton Rouge. "There isn't much that can get me out of Baton Rouge when the Legislature is in session, but the state of the coast is that important," he stated.
Sharing knowledge is key for driving bold, science-based action to rebuild Coastal Louisiana. For this reason, CRCL and our partners began the State of the Coast conference in 2010which has now grown to become the preeminent coastal conference.
More than 1,200 scientists, landowners, federal and state agency personnel, local officials, industry and business leaders, and interested citizens attended SOC18 representing 34 states,. and four countries.
SOC18 included two new elements, the Women’s Coastal Leadership Breakfast and the Student Engagement Series - Ignite Zone, and, for the second time featured, a half day non-technical mini-conference called Restoration on the Half Shell. SOC18 showcased the best available science, innovative ideas, and new technologies that address the dynamic condition of Louisiana’s coast. The conference featured 342 oral and poster presentations. This year, we asked presenters to allow us to share their presentations. Those select presentations are now available to be viewed and downloaded at stateofthecoast.org.
Our thanks go out to the partners, sponsors and exhibitors who made SOC18 possible.
