Cameron Shoreline Beach Clean-Up

The Louisiana Gulf Response Involvement Team (GRIT) and BP planned and implemented a beach clean-up along the Cameron Shoreline at Holly Beach in Cameron Parish, Louisiana on June 4, 2010.  The purpose of the project was to (1) engage volunteers in a safe environment in oil spill response efforts, (2) remove natural and unnatural debris from the potential oil impact zone to reduce quantity and complexity of oil spill clean-up efforts.

Volunteers were deployed to pick up, bag and properly dispose of unnatural debris and rake natural debris and sargassum seaweed into piles, which were transported onto trailers and on a higher portion of the beach.   All anthropogenic debris was bagged, transported by ATV and trailer to the two BP-provided dumpsters. GRIT supplied two ATVs and trailers, BP supplied four ATVs and trailers and numerous volunteers donated the use of their four-wheelers and trailers.  In addition, one local volunteer utilized his front-end loader to move large quantities of sargassum seaweed from the beach.

At the end of a successful day, two 30 cubic yard dumpsters were 90% full with anthropogenic debris and large piles of sargassum seaweed had been removed from the beach.  All volunteers were thanked for their participation.   The beach clean-up event occurred without incident.

Oil spill impact occurred in this area just days after our clean-up event.  All debris that was removed did not have to be handled as oiled waste, hastening oil cleanup and reducing the costs to the responsible party.
